The Suites: Hillsdale College

Hillsdale, Michigan

Student Apartments

The design of Hillsdale Apartments accommodates the changing needs and desires of maturing students: more privacy, freedom and amenities in conjunction with the need for less supervision.

The building has a single entry on each side, one facing the main campus and the other opening toward the proposed intramural facility. A separate wing for each gender joined by shared commons space will provide an opportunity for student interaction while maintaining privacy and support of the college housing standards. The commons area features a welcome desk, student study/TV area, vending and a small retail area, capitalizing on the efficiency of shared amenities and providing a single point of control for security, supervision and interaction.

The individual resident suites were carefully designed to maximize flexibility, privacy and community; privacy by the configuration of the bedrooms and the bath facilities and community in the size, orientation and content of the entry, kitchenette and the living room.

Each suite is configured with a separate mechanical system, which allows individual suite temperature control. Consider ations of sound control, natural lighting, ventilation and furnishing variations and configurations were studied and carefully crafted to maximize the flexibility of the spaces.
