The Robert E. Hemenway Life Sciences Innovation CenterUniversity of Kansas Medical Center
Biomedical Research Facility
This 205,000 sq ft state-of-the-art research center on the Kansas University Medical Center campus houses approximately 300 physicians, scientists and students who collaborate on liver disease, reproductive sciences, neuroscience, diabetes, and proteomics research.
Research conducted within the center integrates biological information obtained from the study of genes and chromosomes (genomics), proteins (proteomics) and biological systems. The study of model organisms and disease models are integrated in this systems approach to biology and disease.
80 adjoining laboratories are set up along the north side of the building with the more specialized labs located towards the center where researchers can share equipment. This arrangement not only encourages collaborative team science, but also helps avoid costly equipment duplication. The vivarium area includes a transgenic mouse facility as well as an ABSL-3 laboratory.
The Robert E. Hemenway Life Sciences Innovation Center was constructed below budget and has well exceeded the expectations of its users.
