New Teaching and Administration Building

The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy new Teaching and Administration Building is a fast paced CM-at-Risk project with an energy goal of ASHRAE 90.1 +30%, LEED Silver equivalent. The new 112,000 sq ft building is designed with two 175-seat classrooms and several smaller classrooms with state-of-the-art distance learning technology for an interactive instructional environment. An integrated teaching laboratory, a working model pharmacy, as well as simulated patient consultation rooms equipped with audio-video observation and instructional capabilities round out this facility designed for modern curriculum and future adaptations.

The building envelope is designed utilizing a pressure-equalized rain screen principle, and employs a layer of closed-cell polyurethane foam as both the thermal barrier and the primary component of the building's air barrier. The roof is designed to be recovered at the end of its useful life without tear-off, thus keeping this material out of the landfill. Sunshades and tinted low-E glazing in the curtainwall system provide for interior visual comfort and excellent solar control, rounding out a sustainable design that will serve the University for many decades to come.

Located on the KU West Campus, the Pharmacy Teaching and Administration Building has been placed to easily accommodate phased future research laboratory and support functions totaling more than 300,000 sq ft. The ultimate goal is to connect the new School of Pharmacy to the Dolph Simons Laboratory Building which houses the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department.
