Mid-Century Renovation

The renovation of the Rollins Group is the third in a series of five projects outlined in the University of Missouri-Columbia’s residential life master plan. Originally constructed in 1965, the Rollins Group includes the twin seven-story Hudson and Gillett residence hall towers connected by a commons building, Rollins Hall.

A new glass addition provides a unifying, yet separate access to the public Rollins Dining and new classroom spaces, while allowing secure entrance to the more private residence halls. Without making major building changes, the addition modernizes the look of the mid-century residence halls, and floods the common spaces with an abundance of natural light.

A new central front desk provides visual access to the entrance of both halls, public lounge spaces, and the mailroom. In support of a student centered environment, new flexible classroom space provides teaching space for groups of 36 to 72 students. A computing site with 18 work stations and a number of computer kiosks have been distributed through the main lounge space for quick student access. The openness and direct access to community function spaces in Rollins encourages a sense of home and community.
